I have been going to carnival since about 1982, only missed a few in all those years.
My favorite was a very rainy weekend but we all still partied our socks off. I had my daughter with me (she was about 3) and a lady took her in to dry her clothes and feed her while we danced in her house, with her sons playing a sound system on two floors.
I've been very lucky too, I've never seen any trouble Just happy people having a good time.

Here's hoping that this year its another trouble free and fantastic time for us all.

It was my first time at the carnival this year, LOVED it and definitely gonna be there next year. It just totally rocked, music was amazing, everyone dancing, took loads of video and photos. Had a few fun days in London but this was just the best. Words cannot convey how great it was...

Only bad bits were - THE PRESS!! In different papers it ranged from 98 to 500 arrests, what a load of shit. 98 I can believe, in London papers even on the Thursday they were still going on about it. I saw a couple of people being arrested or on the floor (usually with a half empty bottle of rum beside them)!! They have nothing better to do and all it does is out some people off, I was very vigilant but as other people say, everyone was having a good time, and yes there will be dick heads out there. But give the police a chance, you try controlling a mob of 850,000 people or trying being amongst it - pretty scary being amongst so many people anyway..

The other thing is, at the start of the parade, the street wasn't cordoned off so people were dancing with the floats which was OK to start with, but this slowed down the parade so really all of the parade route should be fenced off.

Apart from that, so many great memories...

Emma (Manchester) xx

I have loved carnival for so many years as resadent in the heart of the fun I moved to Spain just after Ken Livingstone took over that very first time he turned the route around no one knew where to go and more so did not know how to get away for all the years before the carnival came down Ladbroke Grove from Kensil Road it was truly some thing to see and when people wanted to return home they knew to reverse back to Harrow road where they could get transport this also helped as the many people attending would stay around Portobello Road or by the train station if there was an upset people knew just go to harrow road that end of the grove was always clear and free of problems how ever as I said the first time the route was turned there was hundreds of people making there way to harrow road with the bands someone made a noise like gun fire put the crowd in to panic many fell pushed to the ground |I my self and family had to run and pray this was the first time I ever had a problem I believe it was the 2002 carnival I went to this years carnival and was never more dissapointed the sunday childrens day what happened there were floats with sound systems no live music by the time the other floats came by the people were resting on the truck the saame on the monday I noticed also the huge increase of police officers I never witnessed before in all the years in the past the officers were lined across the main route in a line only moving when the odd float came down, WHY

Also the BBC took up all of St Charles Square on the monday a radio station blocked the total view from my Mothers window she can not get out but enjoyed watching this also took up space where I park my car the residents were not informed and I got out of my bed at 08,00 to see my car being lowered on to a removal truck this year was a disaster I will never make the journey back to the Carnival again the whole idea of carnival has gone making way for sound systems and noise , please bring back the joy of carnival out the sound systems some where else and let the colourful floats and kettle drums etc return keep it smaller if you must but lets get back to the real carnival many thanks

I would like to know why the Police felt it necessary to block off all access to both Goodtimes and Sancho Panza sound systems 3 or 4 hours before Carnival finished? Numerous people said that it was not overcrowded at all times. It ruined our day, and stopped us meeting up with friends, and enjoying the day. Carnival is a free street party, and you should be able to experience all of it as you wish, not go to one place and be forced to stay there all day. The Police are taking control and abusing their power.

I agree that Carnival must stay on the road, but Panorama in Trindad takes place on the Savannah not on the road and here in London it was always in a little park by the canal on the Harrow Rd, so it might be interesting to see what happens when it hits Hyde Park.

Some people don't consider what it's like to live on the main route of the carnival. If you don't live there, one doesn't tend to care about how it affects residents (ie. worrying that people are going to break your windows, constant knocking on the door to ask to use the toilet and sometimes peeing on the door if no one answers, not to mention the deafening music).

"Re-tasking a plane to 'airstrike' the area with Napalm would probably have resulted in a substantial drop in crime over the next couple of years in Greater London... all of the usual suspects were out in force, robbing, sexually assaulting people and generally making life miserable for anyone not interested in this 'display of diversity'..."

"I come to carnival almost every year for the last 4 years..i just have to say that carnival is what you make it..yes there are gonna be the thug wanabees who wanna ruin it for everyone but all i can say is don't get ivolved..always wear an across the body bag and that way your unlikely to get robbed. You may want to bring a mobile but i nevr have a signal at carnival so maybe you should write down inportant numbers on a piece of paper. I can say that i always enjoy my time at carnival i usually find a good sound system and stick there for most of the day. I did follow the floats last year but the police barriers and the one flow traffic system is like herding cattle together i hated it! Im 26 but one thing i do is stay AWAY from Rampage sound as it is impossible to get on that street and there is always the most pushin and shoving, although i have heard that Busy Signal will be on the Rampage stage this year :(. Another thing is carnival finishes way to early. Im from bristol and our carnival finishes at 2am, this gives us the chance to watch the floats, go home and come back later on in the evening. But anyways ,ake sure you wear breathable clothing and flat shoes no slipper things unlesss you wanna walk around with one shoe!! "

"As the carnival is renowned for its elaborate colourful costumes I decided to go to this year’s main parade to hopefully see, in particular, the carnival masks. I was definitely not disappointed.

We arrived to a bustling Victoria station two hours before the carnival was due to start and took the tube to the nearest station to the carnival. It was full of station staff on hand to assist and ensure everything went smoothly and it seemed they were expecting many more people to come. We headed as directed towards the 3 mile carnival route. It was surprisingly quiet which was disconcerting as I had expected crowds and loud music. As we approached the fenced off route I remember being surprised to see that all of the shops and cafes had been heavily boarded up as this must mean they were expecting violence and vandalism. However I had already heard that the carnival has a history of riots and violence.

We carried on and before finding a front row seat we followed the route and came across a bustling street full of an array of makeshift catering stalls with food of every taste, smell, colour and origin. Almost everything was being cooked on barbecues which were issuing smoke into the street that already teamed with people chatting or looking around the stalls.

Once we found a place at the railings it was quite an agonizingly long wait for the parade to begin and reach our spot. The number of spectators grew and thronged around the fences whilst numerous policemen / women, event staff and photographers wandered the empty route in anticipation. Eventually we heard music approaching in the distance and a lorry with a sound system belting out loud music rolled round the corner followed by people dancing in colourful costumes. Many of the costumes were bikinis embellished with glitter and jewels but the impressive ones were those with big head dresses, wings and interesting masks. Everyone was dancing energetically despite some wearing excruciatingly high heels!

After a few lulls in the carnival where there were gaps in the parade, the party got going with continuous streams of loud music (I could feel my lungs vibrating as they went past, it was so deafening!), costumes and people dancing with such infectious enthusiasm you couldn’t help having a little dance in the limited space you had amongst the crowd! The costumes became more exciting as it went along and the music got louder (I hadn’t thought it possible) with the sound systems on lorries loaded with umpteen massive speakers. I couldn’t believe that some people were sitting and standing so close to the speakers yet still managing to talk to each other!

My favorite music was the steel band because I love the sound of steel drums. They were all riding on what looked like a double-decker bus with no sides or roof which was worryingly shaking and bouncing up and down. I also liked the drummers which came along in large groups performing matching actions and changing beat with ease. Everyone looked like they had practiced and prepared so thoroughly and carefully in their dancing, costumes and music.

All in all it was a wonderful day out and I think it is definitely worth experiencing at least once in your life even if the music isn’t your kind of thing. Even though the carnival is known for violence and trouble with the police (apparently there were 203 arrests over the whole weekend – much less than last year) don’t let that put you off – I didn’t see any trouble and compared to the amount of people who go, it is an incredibly small minority who cause problems. The costumes were amazing, as was the atmosphere and I only hope that the photos convey some of this to you!"

"Last went to Carnival 20 yrs ago, very "roots and Reggae" in those days, however times change and my kids very much enjoyed the sound systems and carnival, in fact i would say it was one of the best events we have been to for a long time.

As usual the media pick up on the problems, but thats what we do in the uk,lets have a form of media that looks at good news, where were all the photos of carnival in the national papers, or more than 10 second slot on the bbc, why not televise the event ??

So well done not just to the carnival , but everone involved, on sunday night the streets were full of rubbish but by monday morning they were clean and tidy. toilets were not good , but they where better than the daily used public ones in town that we live !!!

just one more thing-- Why dont you charge for carnival. just think how much a £1 charge for each person that comes to carnival would raise for the notting hill area !!"

"First time at carnival on the Sunday, had a great day but it will be my last visit. I was dancing in a crowd when some guy barged passed me with what at first glimpse looked like a knuckle duster of sorts, but actually gave me some kind of electric shock, leaving me disorientated and dizzy. When he first hit me in the side I actually thought I'd been stabbed or something as this pain shot through me. Very scary indeed. Does anyone know of this happening to anyone else on the Sunday, it was around 6ish?"

"Carnival is great. The atmosphere is truly wicked, a time where everyone can get together and have fun, no matter what colour, creed or race they are.

Of course you will ALWAYS get the YOB element, that want to try and spoil things for people but, when you consider the thousands of people that attend carnival, and the number of arrests made, it can be seen that they are the MINORITY.

The police have to draw a very fine line, as someone stated in an earlier comment, they are greatly outnumbered, and if they were to arrest everyone for every little thing, it could quite litrally cause a riot. So on the whole I think the police do a great job.

Only one major downside I can see, and that is the amount of sound systems in use!!

Whilst I have NO PROBLEM with them or thier music, there needs to be better management of thier positioning owithin the route, as they quite often drown out the wonderful sounds of the fabulous steel bands playing."

"Carnival is how you make it, I to carnival for many years an have always enjoyed myself, the costumes floats and steel band were lovely yes the food is expensive but its alot nicer when you bring lunch from home then you wont expect to pay the high prices.

Yes the police did a good job in keeping the crowd under control its a tough job to do, an I respect them for that. Notting hill Carnival is wicked, enjoyed it respect to all who attended."

"I thought this years carnival was brilliant. Everyone is so quick to cast judgement on the youngsters who attended. No one mentions the thousand's of gangs of youths who went with positivitly, danced, ate and then went home.

With so many people packed up together there will always be a few incidents. As well as a big up to the sounds and bands the police should also be commended for their very demanding work.
Lighten Up!"

"This was my second time going to the carnival and I did have a good time but as the day wore on Monday things started to get very hostile. I began to actually fear for my and my friend’s safety.

I will say HUGE kudos to the London police department. They did a very good job.

At one point I overheard one officer saying to another “Not too bad even though we are out numbered 200 to 1!"

"It was nothing short of awful! I went yesterday and I was bombarded with dunked gangsta wannabees and over crowding. Trying to get the bus home was a nightmare, it was like a pack of hyenas being thrown some prey. Very unpleasant indeed. Police I think did the best they could, when did London get so anti social? Very disappointed. it was beyond belief. I was ashamed to call myself a Londoner."

"Carnival? Sound is good but if you are rsident, you will hate it. Specially how a sound system can be set up in front of your window? Can any1 has sense explain this? What will the babies, children will do all day ( 8-9 hours loud music in the house) if you need to go to work how can you go? No bus, No parking.. You need to walk!

How about dirtines like 4th world countries! used like toilet every corner, rubbish, BROKEN GLASSES! (Who will pay punched tyres of cylists) How about safety? you can write more more and more. But K&C Council cares their tax to be collected but even they do not give you a LIFLET to say what will be happening on your street and area... If you want to complain who is the responsible organazisation? None wants to have responsibilities.. Police would not get into the your resident street WHY? you need to wait untill we finish! Show me your proof of address was asked once? I was coming from my work and did not have any documents.. I was told you can not get in the street.. MY HOUSE there..

Anyway you tell me you will love or hate the carnival?
But I love music, I love carnival just They should do in right place not in front of the my door with 10000 people. WHERE? How about city ( it is empty all long bank holiday weekend) How about hyde park? How about regents park? "

"Let's see what the news has to say about the Carnival this morning...

"Two young men were shot during the Notting Hill Carnival... A small number of people suffered minor stab wounds... Police witnessed groups fighting; objects being thrown at police and large groups of youths pushing roughly through crowds."

"This behaviour -- coupled with the range of weapons we took off people both before the event and during -- leads us to believe that this year's Carnival was a draw for people determined to commit crime and cause trouble."

"Arrests totalled 206, slightly down on last year's figure of 214, while the number of reported crimes was also down by about 55, to 336."

Oh yeah, now I remember why I go out of town this time every year."

"I have been to carnival twice a year for 12 years now and did love it, but Mon 27th Aug 07 was not a good one. At Lord Gelly's sound system the crowd was packed so tight that it allowed a group of young guys to sexually assult woman as they made their way through. These animals are not humans and I fear how many woman were impacted. When they woman complained they just laughed. With so many police there how can this happen? The police were informed but I doubt it was stopped. "

The food was nothing like traditional West Indian food.
I very much doubt whether any of the venders have ever tasted West Indian food, let alone prepared and cooked it. "

I visited Britain for the first time during August of 1994 and subsequently attended the Notthing Hill Carnival during this time. Wow, I was extremely impressed with the extent, orderliness and excitement of this Carnival.

I particularly remember the Curry dish that I had. It was simply marvelous! The Notting Hill Carnival was by far the best carnival that I have ever attended, and among the very best entertainment events that I have enjoyed in my lifetime. Everyone must attent this spectacular event.

In later years, I discovered that the Notting Hill Carnival was started by Trinidadians. If this so, I am overjoyed since I am of Trinidadian descent.

I am an American who is crazy about the United Kingdom. In stating this, I must admit that what makes the United Kingdom great is a festivity, such as the Notting Hill Carnival, an amazing stint in time of pure joy, celebration, and marvel. Every human on earth should attend this Carnival."

I could not get over the mass of people from all cultures and backgrounds that awaited me. I have been hooked their on since and look forward to this event every year.

This is a planned event to which we save up for and book
Hotels in advance for our stay.

As for moving this to Hyde Park...no...way...if this came to pass, then the Tourism this enables London for that Weekend will be lost greatly.

I for one will not go to Hyde Park...The money I spend on this event we could quite quite easily go abroad for a week.

But we choose to go To Nottinghill Carnival... "

"Whoever wrote ten ways to improve carnival was having a laugh right? I found it extremely offensive. But moving on.... I love carnival and have been going for many years. I used to go when I was little with my mum and now I play Mas with a band that I have been with for 8 years.

Yet, however much I enjoy carnival I find myself reminiscing about the days before. Carnival seems to be steering further and further away from what it was originally meant to be. If you go to Trinidad Carnival, which is what Notting Hill is supposed to be based on, you'll find that it is a completely different experience. There is more focus on the floats and people simply join in and go MAD! It is like everyone is a masquerader. It seems like we have lost the vibe over here a little bit.

The barriers bother me the most. People too squash up, squash up. Police close off barriers, but of course no one can see the barriers ahead, which leads to huge amounts of pushing. Also more significantly it stops people from joining with floats. I can appreciate that on a Sunday it is not safe to have people roaming around floats where children can easily get lost, etc. But on a Monday, which is supposed to be big people day, people should be able to jump up and interact with the masqueraders.

In Trinidad, carnival goes all through the night, clean into the next day. Then they start all over again (and their carnival is longer than two days!) We on the other hand are lucky if we even make it to 10 o clock! I know revellers do not want to go home when the sun is still out and people still have nuff energy. It is supposed to be a big party, now which party you know finish at 8? Even funfairs and festivals finish later than that! Notting Hill used to go on until the early hours. What changed? I hear that trouble makers tend to come out at night, but do a few problem people have to ruin it for the rest of us? And really to tell you the truth, I have never seen a big brawl or whatever break out. So the crime rates cannot be as big as some claim. To curtail these menaces, why do they police not come up with some initiatives that do not also limit the fun of spectators…. Whatever happened to banning people who caused trouble at carnival? I think that may actually help somewhat.

The only other thing that bothers me is the attitude of some of the police. I do not mind their presence and I am used to it. I understand why they have to be there and appreciate it. However do they have to help out so grudgingly? There are a few coppers that will assist you with a smile, but there are many more who will not. This year, different policemen were rude to me on three separate occasions in one day! After asking a policeman about a road, he complained of how someone had moved a barrier and so people were walking down a road that they should not be. He then proceeded to take his frustration out on me as though I was the cause of it and he even stopped masqueraders from following their float, which had mistakenly driven down this road. The rude officer then simply told them to find some other way to meet back up with their truck! It was just ridiculous. I do not wish to see surly police, scrunching up their faces to the music - even though they already have their earplugs in - and ruining my vibe. Why can they not celebrate the culture and enjoy themselves? Yes technically they are working, but this does not mean that they cannot have fun with it at the same time.

And as for putting the carnival in a park........I REALLY DO NOT THINK SO! Carnival does not belong in a park and I think I would probably stop going if they did do that. The answer to the congestion is not Hyde Park, but quite possibly in a bigger route and less use of barriers. Still, the best plan for a great carnival is to stopping stressing and watching face and to just party! We need to bring good clean fun back into carnival."

How would I be able to get say 20 in costumes into the procession please? I noticed that my previous school from Cornwall had their steel band there this year so it looks hopeful that outsiders can join in the great event too."

"i really enjoyed my first experience of seeing the carnival. The atmosphere in the crowd was very friendly and we struck up several conversations with people throughout the day. I agree that it was a long stop go procession with the floats but I was impressed with the quality and the way people looked as if they were enjoying it all.We took some great photos and have made a bright cheerfull collage display in our office to keep us smiling through the dark winter days ahead. My ears took a week to recover.......and i said I thought the police were wussers for having ear plugs in........I have learnt to eat humble pie.

The police presence didn't upset me though they did seem a little stiff and starchy towards the crowd and some of the dancers who tried to encourage them to join in. It did come across as a bit "them and us" rather than we are lONEdrs as the street banners proclaimed. As a Wiltshire country bumpkin up in town for the day I did have a few apprehensive nerves but I felt safe all day.

Most enjoyable and I hope to return for more again next year."

"Hi, I have been to carnival every year for about the last 10 years.

The music, food, and atmosphere is amazing however, the barriers this year didn’t help the flow of people but restricted it and I myself was quite freeked out about being in the crowd as people we pushing and pushing but there was no-where to go. I understand that this is for peoples safety from falling under trucks etc but feel it could be managed a little better.

People that are pushing cannot see that barriers maybe something to notify people that the barriers are there would stop them from pushing to get through."

"I had a brilliant time this year - didn't see much of the floats and it is a shame that people felt they had to wait too long in between each one.

I find it deeply irritating that people are down on the police presence. Ok the police aren't the most popular of organisations but why not just use your head and instead of doing what all your friends do (slag them off - cause its so cool) realise that they are
there for a reason.

people getting mugged, children getting lost, stabbings, heaven forbid some sort of attack on londoners - which have all happened in the past - and if it happened to you I'm sure you would appreciate them being there.

They may not alwasy be up to date on the tube situation but things change when you put severl thousand people in one spot.

So please would people stop throwing icecreams at them and ashing on their helmets.

Sancho Panza and Norman J were amazing - shame about the odd aggresive type but didn't dampen my day."

"I attended the Carnival for the first time and was quite excited by the prospect of attending one of the biggest carnivals around.

I was extremely disappointed. We waited for some time for the first float to come out and it was quite promising and then there was a gap of about an hour until the second float came out which consisted of people in combat outfits drinking and just walking along behind a lorry and then nothing again.

We decided to go home and reading some of the reviews I am glad we did as someone mentioned there were only two floats between 1 - 4. The paries in the evening may have been good but surely the original idea was to have a good carnival with floats with wonderful costumes.

"The floats were great and the music/dancing were great! My kids really liked the whole ambiance. But the troublemakers were not!

Overall it's a great event, but I won't be going again - just too dangerous with all the brawls. Some of the fights that broke out were quite bad. I am black and I find it shameful that many of our youths act that way."

"Hi this was my 2nd time there seemed to be a lot of gaps this yr which spoilt it. Some members were either too pissed or too tired or had left to have fun themselves by the time they passed us the 1st time I went I went to the start and should have this time as I had more time at the sound systems. This time I wasted time waiting for the floats didn’t see the end and ended up at Sancha for only an hour before having to leg it through the crowd to get tube for train home. Next time straight to the beginning of procession and more time at sound systems gutted missed Norman jay.

Didn’t see any trouble everyone seemed friendly and smiley police were nice and helpful. More toilets would be good, and more bin liners dotted about for rubbish. it is still really good soz to hear some of u having hassles it was busy, take care world. x"

"I use to attend the carnival religiously starting in 1976 right up to 2004, I know many people who play Mass, play sound systems, are vendors, live in the area etc, so I guess I can say I have experienced the changes first hand. I have not attended the last 2 years because of a few things:

1. The barriers which control flow of people, I found this dangerous and actually restrictive to my enjoyment;

2. it’s had become more difficult to follow a chosen float and really get into the ambience of the theme and music;

3. the gaps between floats, every time I would get a tropical high, it would be lost waiting for the next float to arrive;

4. The Police attitude, why do they seem so uncomfortable, most can’t even tell u which stations are opened or closed, which direction to take to get yourself home. AND most the time the information they are giving u is inconsistent.

Of course, I understand that some of my issues are just that my issues due to crime etc, but considering the number of people attending carnival is it really so.

Saying all that, I have really missed carnival, the only time I have felt threaten or frighten, was due to the restrictive barriers, and crowd build up (I’m getting on now, my little heart can’t take it). My friends have informed me this year was better, so next I intend to see for myself. I would like to see more freedom and less sheep herding, after all we are people.

Most of all I DON’T EVER want the carnival to be in no park, carnival is a public event marked by merrymaking, music, feasting and processions. It’s not one man’s creation it’s many people’s creation, to entertain many people. It’s only over 2 days and not just for a chosen few. It’s a time when EVERYONE can get involved if they so wish.

So roll on next year."

"I tell you something, i was on this carnival with two friends, that was my first carnival.

Monday evening ,about 9.00 p.m,i was sat down with my friends, having a beer, smoking, eating in a neighbourhood. Almost 500 black people next to us, nothing happens.

I tell you something: Show them respect and don't fear the young thugs and nothing won't ever happen."

"I was in a band again this year, it was wicked. Yes i heard about the hoodies but if people look closer they will see that alot of these groups are made up of young males from a variety of cultures, so please stop calling it black hoodies.

After my rant i want to say any one who wants to really get invloved in carnival should play mass. The security aim to look after you and it is just so much fun. I have only returned to work today because every part of my body was hurting me from the constant dancing and laughing.

I cant wait for next year."

"We travelled from Wiltshire for our first Notting Hill Carnival on Monday and enjoyed the experience. The food we ate was good, the atmosphere was friendly - only saw one minor incident that could be described as trouble, and was calmed down quite quickly. The music and soundsystems were good and loud, but "when the music hits you feel no pain" - if rather packed with revellers, but surely that''s what''s expected (even managed to get to Dub Vendor to but some CDs at last).

The toilet facilities, if a bit basic, were available - never queued more than a couple of minutes.

All in all a good time and we will be back.

Just two pieces of, hopefully, constructive criticism:

1. Please get the carnival procession to be a bit more continuous - two floats then nothing for 40 minutes, then a couple more floats, then another 20 minute wait, etc - did become a bit tedious waiting, but at least you could use the toilets during the gaps and not miss anything.

2. Can the police coordinate their info? PCs in Tavistock Road directed us back to Westbourne Park tube via Channel One Soundsystem (wonderful music) and Westbourne Park Road - the PCs then won''t let you go to Westbourne Park tube. If it''s not accessible tell us - not send people elsewhere to be told that. Managed to get to Bayswater OK but only as I could find my own way there, police didn''t seem to know where it was!!!

Enough griping - great day. Respect to all involved. See you all next year."

"My thoughts? It's getting bigger - I'm sure there were way more people and far less space this year.

Police - Yea there were loads of em this year (any suprise with whats going on in the world at the moment) but I thought they did a good job of crowd control, and I'm not one to normally dish out praise to them. God knows what would happen if anything bad ever occurred there as I'm sure that the ensuing stampede would kill far more people than anything else - let’s just hope it never happens! I'm sure you'd all be pleased they were there if it did!

Part of Notting hill is the organisation - or sometimes - the lack of it! This year the procession was due to come round to where I was about 2 P.M. So that time comes and goes with nothing. Then, the first float comes by - hooray - we are off! Umm, nope, six floats go by - then nothing for another hour! Then a few more, then a half hour gap - and so it continues until I gave up and went for a stroll to catch some sound systems and music instead. I'm not complaining by the way - just commenting on what happenend.

The sound systems were great as usual, can’t honestly tell you which ones I ended up at apart from Pineapple Tribe and Sancho Panzer.

I have a little grip about the Panza, and I''m sure this is just a personal preference thing, but I''m sorry to say that I found the music a bit uninspiring. There were some great tunes but the minimalist sound never seemed to change in tempo or feeling, and just stayed as it was when I got there. I personally like a bit of a rollercoaster set where the music lifts you up and then gives you a break and then builds again. I have to say that I likened Sancho to a drive on the motorway - great to be doing 80 MPH but not much to see or inspire you on the way! Perhaps a bit harsh.

Still knocked out by the general levels of friendliness that still seem to exist from all sides partygoers and participants – maybe I’ve just been lucky, but it’s a definite plus point to London as a whole for that.

Conclusion, a good laugh worth the trip - on to next years!"

"I am also French but I love Soca music and know the music, the words, the beat and more importantly where it came from and the culture and that's why I go to the carnival. Of course I got a few funny looks as it is fairly unusual for a white person to know almost every lyric of nearly soca tune played out but I think people respected it in the end as at least someone outside of their culture has took the time to learn about it. This is partly what carnival is about!

Hence why the police want to shut it down. I actually asked one group of officers if they were expecting a riot and they said "yes because of the nature of the event" and I replied "what too black people for you?" and got told "we're not in the position to answer that question".

I waited at Ladbrooke Grove from 1pm until 4.00pm and saw 2 floats - yes 2!!! There was at least an hour wait in between floats and in between we just saw the thugs of the MET walk up and down until eventually people actually booed and whistled at four that walked down. People's conversation was on the police and not on enjoying the carnival. In the end I left at 4.30pm after getting fed up of waiting.

I walked past another group of policemen and said "Well done for killing the carnival" to which one said rather pleased "That''s alright love, that's what we're here for!"

Says it all dunnit?"

I was a part of fusion hi-power which was the Jamaican float! And I had a good time! I danced the day away! BIG UP ALL THE JAMAICAN TWIST dancers and DJ DANGER!

"When I was dancing at carnival a group of boys came and started pushing and shoving and stole my phone, I managed to forget about it and continue enjoying myself... but whilst I was traveling to an official after party a huge gang of youths attacked me and two of my friends, they stole my bag and were acting violently...nobody around helped.

I love carnival and have been going for years but they made me fear for my life so I am considering stopping going to carnival...the police were spending more time guarding certain roads than helping those in the crowds. I am seriously disappointed with this year as I was at that point left with no phone, no money, no bank card and no way of getting home.

Thanks to idiots that have no respect!"

"I have to say that i was really disappointed with carnival this year. I go carnival every year, but after this year i really doubt i will be going again.

There were so many youngsters out to cause problems, shoving people, starting trouble. i also didnt feel very safe, i witnessed so many fights, and clearly saw policemen standing there as they were too scared to stop the fights. And also the police have ruined carnival, they literally block off so many roads that u cant even go and dance and have a good time. And at one point i got lost and asked a policeman what road we were on, and asked him for directions..and he said he couldnt help help me, coz he didnt even know where we were!.. whats that about, shouldnt policemen know the roads and routes, if they are working on a particularly busy day, where people are bound to get lost...

Overall, my experience of carnival this year wasnt very nice...But regarding the floats, the music, the costumes....it was very nice. I just hope for the future, that youths stay at home, and find something better to do, rather than coming out to cause trouble!"

All was well until the late afternoon when a group of black youths attacked a couple in front of us. Unfortunately, because we were walking so closely behind them we got caught up in the mallee. Although I screamed to them that she was pregnant, they didn''t seem to care. Fortunately, one brave man helped us and moved us to safety.

I suppose that in addition to trying to showcase the beauty of London''s diversity, we also get to see how ugly the black hoodies can be. It leaves one to wonder why there are such stereotypes..."

"Monday was the first time that I had been to the carnival. I have to say that it is massively hyped by the media.

It is ok, but I really don't see what all the fuss is about. It may be large in terms of numbers of people in the crowd, but the actual display was quite small. Never the less, people obviously go to a lot of effort to make the costumes and they were impressive.

As you would expect, there were the token youths, shoving people around in the crowd. Most people were well behaved though.

No matter what the police do, some people are always going to be bitter towards them. I personally think that they were welll organised and were more than willing to help me with some queries that I had."

"To all the people that complain about the rubbish is it really that unexpected that a carnival with several hundred thousand people would produce rubbish? Visit any market in the country on a busy day and there will be litter, of course there is going to be litter after carnival.

I think a lot of the "there was too much litter, I'll never go again" crowd just use that as a convenent stick with which to beat carnival. I'd be very surprised if the litter at places like Glastonbury, V, Gay pride or any other event equally raises their ire.

It's noticable that so many of the people who disliked it so much are either those of such a frail disposition that someone raising their voice to them spoils their whole day and those who just outright are disgusted at the sight of Black people"

"I attended this years carnival and would like to make a few constructive points in order to make future carnivals more successful and inviting:

1. More CLEAN toilets - this should prevent people from peeing in the streets.

2. Lessen the gaps between floats or stop the gaps all 2gether as this dampened the atmosphere.

3. Designated people should be on hand to help people unfamiliar with the area, know where they are/where they need to go etc.

4. Open tube stations should be clearly marked and signs to the nearest should be put up."

"I go to carnival a lot and not going to disrespect it coz I think it’s the best.

I took my girl friend on Monday and shes pregnant. Not over large but still pregnant and to be honest I had no problems moving her about I was there and made sure no one knocked her in her belly.

We chilled at sound system most of the day but on the way back too station when it was packed a few of the more arrogant people showed their true sides.

About 16 of them said "lets bore though" they just started pushing the crowed and running at it I, was on the pavement and I see one of these boys about to push my bird in the stomach to move her so I stopped him and pushed him back into the crowd.

I could not believe it nore could the family’s round me when he turned around and started to try a fight with me. I told him she was pregnant and he says he don’t care and started to give me argro still wanting to fight. He was such a idiot I was not scared and would have probably seriously hurt him if he was too swing a punch or take action but I wouldn’t wish to do this in a celebration.

I had support from some of the families standing on the pavement who had herd him totally embarrass himself. And he just walked away.

I think these rudeboys types need there parents to stick the belt across their face not there ass."

"Hi,

I went to the Carnival on Monday for the 2nd time and may not go again. It's a real shame. The carnival atmosphere was fantastic and I really loved dancing away to the music. Why, oh why, does there have to be extremely dangerous people there, looking like they want to fight with everyone.

I think if you live in London you are used to walking past these pikeys (black or white, no matter how ''bling'' you are!). I don't! I truly felt that my life was in danger and was very much relieved that I got home safely last night.

It was a carnival of two sides for me. On one side you have the feeling of equality, the way humans are meant to be, with the global music and coming together of so many people. The darker side tells me that poverty still has a firm grip on this country. If you are treated badly by another person consistently throughout your life you will take it out on others. That is obvious. What I will say though, is that every person who attended yesterday was once a harmless smiling baby. Something has gone worryingly wrong for a lot of people!!!

Anyway, well done organisers on cool carnival and sorry I had to be quite negative."

"Carnival is all about different races, religions, and creeds mixing with each other.. Yes it was messy, yes it was noisy, yes it was crowded... But if it was none of the above it wouldn't be a carnival!!!

As for the police presence, surely it can only be a good thing, I personally acting as a steward for a float with children performing on, was more than happy with thier help when needed, and most of all to the VERY fast response I received from one officer, when I told him about a rucksack laying on the route.

Unfortunatly you will always get the "trouble makers" no matter where you go and whatever the occasion, but I feel the enjoyment had by most people far outweighs the problems encountered.

Roll on 2007 (Should have caught up on my sleep by then)"

"Overall, a terrific carnival. But it is crowded, and those who are frail on their feet certainly don't have an easy time.

In particular, if you want to avoid hassle it's best to avoid the parade - when you really do get cooped in to allow the parade pass. That''s a pity, since it's the parade that it is most likely to attract young and old alike.

For a better - and easier - time, just head to the sound systems instead.

A few things could be better:

1. More toilets would be great. Nobody wants to go pissing in drains, but people often aren't left with much of a choice.

2. If there is anyway of opening up more tubes, that would be great too. The walk back to westbourne park tube is a very long one.

Top marks to the police for crowd control - especially at the tube stations.

And, above all, thanks to Norman Jay for his endless Good Times."

"Carnival is amazing! Never in my life have seen so many people of so many different ages and backgrounds dancing, celebrating and having such a damn good time. I live directly on the parade route and it is a privilage to have this celebration of culture and music on my door step!

Yeah if you don't have your own toilet and food supplies you gotta plan ahead a bit but there is ample information from the net and flyers about how to do that. I'm a white girl and I didn't feel at all unwelcome or out of place. I smile at everybody and they smile back, it's a two way street.

I can understand that it's not everyones cup of tea, but it's only two days, go away! Even with the mess, and the crowds, and the noise I would rather be here where there is a genuine buzz than some boring, quiet, beige, unifrom enclave hiding away from the world!

I had the world on my front steps!

For the people who complaint about the foods they should have compplaint to the food stors and get their money back.

I've always loved attending the carnival as it is the time to express yourself about how u feel about your colour. Where u come from and a respect for the people that created this important journey for us to be able to party for two days.

What winds me up are those people who go out of there way to cause trouble, dramas.

The floats should be on a seperate day from, the sound systems or in a seperate section that way you seperate the trouble makers form the real jump up crowd,

What annoys me also are those silly people that come to carnival with there dogs, push bikes and prams and want to walk down the heart of ladbroke grove and get upset when people are pushing and shoving them. by all means come to carnival but stay on the outskirts,

Carnival should be on a saturday and sunday and the monday would be just right to recover befoer going back to work on Tuesday fresh instead of tired on tuesday because u were out late monday night now u got to call in work and say uve got belly ache and you cant make it in.

Keep carnival on the road the whole fun of carnival is the freedom of movement forget being in a park, that is not what carnival is about.

Carnival should go on untill at least 10pm, then i would be really happy."

"For some reason I decided to attend Carnival this year..why? I must have forgotton how unpleasant it can be, some features are:

Overall vibe, is NOT a friendly positive vibe. There is a definate feeling that white people are not really welcome. In general you dont look people in the eye, and no smiling/chatting like you would expect to do at such a "happy day"

Crowds, the mad rampage and crowds are not for the faint hearted. Each to their own but I pitied the police standing against the surging barriers and I shocked that there were no stampedes/crushings. At one stage I was genuinely scared.

Violence, being pushed shoved and hissed at...nice

Dirt, rubbish and broken glass everhwere

I wont bother attending again, its in my neighbourhood but its more of an endurance test than "fun".."

Most of the crowd were understanding and very friendly, but a small majority as always attempt to spoil the party for everyone, One female in particular was advised that colville square was closed for a short period for crowd safety, her reply in front of families with children was disgusting to say the least.

I have read some of the above comments relating to the number of police on duty, believe me the number of officers on duty are required . If officers were to stop and search large groups of youths in hoodies it would be deemed as "to heavy handed""

I was disappointed by the lack of support from the police in helping the stewrads to keep control of the crowds and we actually didn't make it around the entire circuit due to this.

We never saw any trouble until the end of the carnival when a large group of young men decided to make their presence known and lob bottles into the crowd hitting a young girl who was in the carnival in the head. We saw these youths around 5 times starting trouble with random people and even when they walked passed the police with large wine bottles in their hands, they wasn''t stopped. I understand some of these youths were arrested.

It was unclear as to why there were so many police officers present as they didn''t help the stewards and they didn''t do as much as they should regarding the incident with the youths. I appreciate the terror threats which are present but I still feel that more could have been done to prevent the commotion...after all it is their job, is it not??"

It is a truly horrendous experience how anyone can like walking in debris and urine and be stuck amongst thousands sorry millions of people in essentially two main roads that were never built for this kind of activity is truly beyond me.

The problem is too many people are in denial and for some strange reason that this is a good day out. Trust me it depends on what you look for entertainment. In the 70's and 80's it was fun. The streets were not barricade off and there was more space to enjoy yourself.

I think people are just fooling themselves scared to even admit that carnival is way past its sell by date. Cheap and dreadfull costumes, poor dancing ability and just plain nonsense.

Even the food & service was of a poor standard. My £6 jerk chicken – with no salad - was awful. I think that it would be better in future for the Notting Hill Carnival organisers to deploy their own professional personnel with regard to selling food, drink, etc of which would generate a much needed income.

So after spending an enjoyable bank holiday Monday at the Notting Hill Carnival 2006, I couldn't help but notice a group of at least 10 hooded black youths walking along Bayswater Road, London at around 8:30pm. One of the youths indicated to the gang that it was "time for business". Were they all going to work a night shift? Nope! Broken bottles then appeared from nowhere and a couple of innocent people unfortunately got injured as a result. I think that the attack was planned and anyone would have been a potential target. The youths then ran off after the assault – laughing."

"I’m a police officer who policed the carnival this year and must say even though I was working I really enjoyed myself, there were many friendly people who were there to have enjoy themselves and promote the carnival the way that it should be.

I would like to thank you for making my first carnival a very memorable one, and I will certainly be working it next year. As for the not so friendly ones why do you feel the need to attend the carnival to ruin peoples experiences, it’s not fair the carnival is about celebration not causing trouble. And many people will not return in future years which is a real shame. That is my only negative for the whole of the event."

"I was part of the parade this year with the Trinidad and Tobago carnival club for the first time and i must say i had an fabulous time!

The police presence was a reassuring but not aggressive and the majority of the crowds were amazing, friendly and having fun - however it was a shame to see swarms of young boys running riot and terrorising people. I saw about 30 black boys kicking one boys head in and another group running past bottling people - at one point they also started throwing bottles into the Carnival procession and one girl got hit it the face. Its a real shame that not everybody is there for the same reason because a majority of us are actually there to have a great day and dance our ways into the night...

I hope these little thugs stay away next year... "

"Well what can be said, I thought the carnival would just be a regular float parade where I would be bored after ten minutes... I could not be further from the truth!

My friends and I definitely had a weekend we will never forget thanks to the energy, passion and the spirit of everyone we met at the carnival.

Bright colours were plenty, beer was flowing, policemen were smiling, and people were singing, dancing and partying like it was the last day on earth.

I really struggle to describe how good it is to people who’ve never been.

We will definitely see you there next year!"

"This was the first time I attempted the carnival and was quite excited. Although I would say its not for the timid. On exiting the train station I was forced to follow the crowd and felt quiet disorientated. Once we’d reached a spot to see the carts me and friends had to link hands so as not to lose one another with the movement of the crowd, I was then shoved and told that I couldn’t obstruct the flow. Had I been holding my child’s hand god only knows my reaction would have been alot worse! But I was told not to ‘Talk Big’ when I complained.

After feeling quite shaken from the verbal abuse, we then made our way through the back roads to avoid such confrontation again, as all the individuals seemed as bollshy as each other. Did not feel welcome in the slightest.

Then once we’d found some music we like we started to make out way through the crowd on for my friend to be pinned by a very large man who after we’d escaped the crowd we discovered had stolen her purse.

I felt utterly victimised and it wasn’t even my purse.

I shall never go to that festival again and feel disappointed that I have lost part of my London to a bunch of individuals who obviously have a major chip on their shoulder!"

"I live on the main carnival route, on the grove, and it's fabulous, and has been for the 18 years since I first lived here. I feel so lucky to be right in the centre, where we can barely hear ourselves speak in the flat, once a year, and are part of this overwhelming celebration of exuberance. There are sites for all tastes from quiet restful areas in Athlone Gardens, to the frenzy outside Ladbroke Grove tube.

The first highlight for me this year was the steel band opening Sunday morning, around 7am. We danced up and down the street, Ebony was brilliant as ever. Then a rest before the main parades kick off. Sitting around in Meanwhile Gardens, an
exuberant array of stalls, and back on the road when the floats start passing by, followed by all those happy people in amazing costumes.

There were lots of police, but they largely stayed off the route, but in plain sight. I didn't see any trouble except one idiotic driver trying to force his way through early Sunday. He knocked someone over, who had to be taken away by ambulance. The driver got arrested, and had his car trashed by the crowd. Still, that was the only trouble I saw.

The final highlight was the Sunday evening final procession - how often do you see a tide of people dancing after the last few floats up Ladbroke Grove, in a beautiful August twilight?

To those inhabitants to find it unbearable: Move somewhere else, it''ll be cheaper for you, and it might bring rents down in the area - you''d do yourselves and everyone a favour. Up the road across Harrow Road there are nice parks, and it''s quiet.

Some constuctive criticism:
You sound systems on floats should take down the volume. We can't hear the steel bands once you get started up. Music has to be loud, sure, but not so loud as to drown out the next
float, it's pointless."

"What a horrible experiece! On Monday, I travelled all the way for York for this event since I kept hearing that it was such a great festival, but was sadly mistaken. In addition to being pushed around by thugs who punch one of my friends someone stole my wallet! I WILL NEVER COME TO THIS EVENT EVER AGAIN!"

"I am a resident of Notting Hill and live directly inside the parade route, next to a sound system and loads of food stalls.

Carnival is fantastic! The floats are wonderful and some of the costumes are beautiful and must have taken months to make. Yes it''s noisy and busy and dirty etc.... it is only for 2 days and its a fabulous celebration.

People complain about the dirt etc... being there for days, but they don't give any credit to the marvellous job the council do in clearing up the mess. In reality 95% of the rubbish and waste is gone by Tuesday morning, the cleaners work all night and not only are the streets cleaned of rubbish they are washed! Believe me I have first hand experience I live here.

With regard to the high police presence I think it is a very good thing. I felt safe walking the streets and with a lot of gangs of drunken rowdy young men and women around (particularly on the monday) it was nice to know there was always a policeman 10 yards away. Ultimately if you are there to have a good time and not cause trouble you have nothing to worry about from the police.

The only thing I felt was sad were certain comments I heard that white people shouldn't be there. Why is that? I understand what the Carnival represents and in that spirit shouldn't rascism from any side of the fence be quashed? I am white, I live in Notting Hill and I love Notting Hill Carnival. I would have thought I have just as much right to be there as anyone else.

Roll on 2007!"

"The carnival was such a horrid experiance.

I have been living in London for the past 12 years and I never went to single one. But last weekend's one was happening right in front of my flat and as such I had no choice. My bank holiday weekend was utterly ruined.

The music is horrid and the display of such horrendously un-attarctive flesh was vomit inducing-- who told these unsightly woment bear their arsess and bossoms?

I hated every single moment of it."

"Once again THANK YOU to the people of Nottinghill, we had a great time, and didn''t see any trouble at all.

Yes its a squash at times, but as long as people remember to be nice to each other, its not too much of a problem. I can see the residents point about all of the rubbish, but what do you do when there are no bins due to the threat of bombs being put in them?

We travelled from Southend with me dressed as a Fairy, so I was a little worried about people making nasty comments, but everyone just smiled at me, or said positive things.

As a carnival regular I welcomed the police being there in such high numbers, I remember there being far more trouble in the past, and on the whole they do turn a blind eye to funny smelling ciggies.

We plotted up at Gazza''s for most of the day, apart from the occassional wander in search of toilets, the atmosphere around Gaz is great, for me his stage is second to none, from the amount of smiling faces around him I would say I''m not the only person who thinks so.

We had a great day !!!, My apologies to anyone who got a slap from my fluffy pink wings, see you all next year :-)"

"I am so sad to see so many negative comments about the carnival!

I have been a couple of times before and have never really had the full carnival experience. I went yesterday and had one of the best days out in years! I love a good party and this certainly was a good party, so many people of different backgrounds dancing in the street together, lot's a smiles and fantastic costumes.

I didn't see any trouble, my only gripe would be the over policing, I was seperated from my male friend by the police who forced my down a narrow channel along with loads of rowdy drunk teenagers (this was about 10pm). I don't think this did much for MY personal safety. But hey, i'm still in one piece!

As for locals who feel the carnival interfers with their rights.. I have onle word for them-MOVE!"

"I went to the Carnival on Sunday and Monday - I live in the Notting Hill area and would like to remnd every one who attended and was disappointed that great the Carnival is a celebration of Caribbean music and is the ONLY festival organised and celebrated by immigrants or descendants of the Caribbean islands.

For me it's a sign of progress and a time to look back at and commemorate the experiences of my grandaprents who faced racism, poor housing conditions and genrally low self-esteem.
The carnival has been running for 42 years in various forms and in the 21st century we can celebrate emancipation from racial suppression in England.

So for those of you who feel you had an appaling time - you need to know what is representing and if you had an awful time finding toilets and the start of the parade - well you should have planned your day accordingly. I feel sorry for the children and parents who did take their children into the crowds as it really wasn't the best place to be with a pushchair!

As for the presence of the police, well it was expected considering the current terrorism fear in London - did anyone even consider that - considering that there were 1/2 million people at the parade, it would have been ideal for a potential loose headed terrorist to cause absolute chaos!

So in future for those of you who are considering going - keep this motto in mind...

"EVERY SPECTATOR IS A PARTICIPANT -
Carnival is for all who dare to participate"."

"I went to the Carnival for the first time this year, arriving at 12.45pm. I was very disppointed. We stood for a total of 4 hours in Ladbroke Grove by barriers for the carnival procession which when it did arrive was about 10 mins of 3 - 4 floats/groups 4 - 5 times with a huge wait in between. I got bored waiting! Left at 5pm.

What time did the procession go on to? Did I miss something! I thought I was going to see a big procession with lots of costumes. This is ridiculous. I certainly won't be going again. And that's a shame. "

"Me and my family travelled up from wales just 2 see this years notting hill carnival. it's the first time we have been to a notting hill carnival and were very disapointed as it was not what we xpected.

We found the local people very rude and greedy charging a £1 for the toilet (and people wonder why others pee in the street!) the breaks in between the carnival spoilt the atmosphere. then if that wasn''t enough, we were directed 3 different places by three different policemen going back and forth and not getting anywhere.

It took us 2 and half hours just to get to the tube station and i suffer with cystic fibrosis so this was very exhasting. On a good word the costumes were brilliant and you could see that a lot of work had been put into them."

"As a resident of Notting Hill, I agree with "Mr D Midwinter" regarding the trouble the carnival attracts.

By all accounts about a million people attended the carnival this year. These people have their fun, etc, BUT I live here and have to deal with the revellers'' rubbish and drunken-disorder. Additionally, the entire place becomes a toilet for anyone wanting to relieve themselves.

In the past few years, the crowds have become more brazen and larger - the streets are small enough with the current number of people living there.

So before you talk about how much you love going to the Carnival every year. Ask yourself if you would feel the same if they have it in your neighbourhood. So go get drunk and party somewhere else!"

"I've been to several in the past years on my own, but this year I brought my family to see the festivities and was shocked by the number of fights and violence this year.

Although there were many police at the event in many of the busy areas, several of the side streets where two of the incidents occurred were not monitored. After just a few hours, I feared for my family''s safety and left. I suggest that if you want to go next year, leave the little ones at home."

"It was my first time at the carnival, the atmosphere was terrific!

I was the lady wearing fairy wings (which I sell as well) and there was a lot of interest in them which I was encouraged by. BUT the main gripe I have with the carnival organisation, was the police blocking off so many streets so that it was near impossible to get out. We were sent backwards and forwards numerous times into a crowd that was so dense it was frightening.

One policeman said and I quote " We are blocking off theses streets so that people don''t get squashed" So he sent us back to get even more squashed!! It took us about an hour and a half to get to a tube station!! Now that IS daft!!

Toilets are another isuue that you need to get right, so many people ended up peeing right there in the street, rivers of urine just running down the road....yuck!!! But apart from that it was a fantastic experience."

We are virtually IMPRISONED! Is this what carnival is supposed to be about, for some people to enjoy themseves at others expense and before someone says if you dont like it move out how can you if you're poor.

In the 21st century the concept of carnival should be looked at to see if it can be done in a way that doesn,t trample on the freedoms of local citizens"

It may have just been kids and steel band IN THE BEGINNING but where do you think steel band originated from!! HELLO!!! And as for your take on the people who live around the carnival area some of them enjoy the atmosphere of carnival I have been to Carnival where I have seen the people that live in the area looking outside of their window above in the houses on the street some of them just come down on out and have a good time CARNIVAL IS WHAT YOU MAKE IT!! It is what it is!!!

Unfortunately we do have a few killjoys that do not care about what they do there if they are not having a great time its a monkey see monkey do thing!! There need to be a better coordination of the way people are walking on the pavement in a two way traffic zone with more space; I say it should be held in a park there is more space to move in and around the carnival!"

Nowadays, its a place where people can just eat and drink (to their hearts content) outside and hear music. I stopped going because it was to controlled, although this is a good thing in parts, you are at times stopped from joining in, and it is a long while before you can join in. it seem also the sound systems, have taken over.

Would the people who seek the sounds of systems care if they were in the streets or in a park (with public toilets)? "

I love everything about carnival; food, music, floats, sound systems, even not being able to walk properly on Tuesday from dancing like a lunatic!

For the past 8-9 years, i mainly go to KCC & Norman Jay sound systems and dance non-stop. I meet up with the same crowd year after year and celebrate all the good things carnival stands for. I only ever take pups (newcomers) one at a time and they cannot believe the fantastic atmosphere and return year after year like me.

Carnival is my farewell to summer, although I have danced with a cardboard box on my head in past years to stop me getting drenched, more often than not I have sunburn to match my sore feet.

"I attended the Carnival celebrations and had a great time. However, I would like to place on record my disappointment with the "people traffic" arrangements. While I agree that barriers are a good idea, perhaps it would be wise to use the police presence to properly regulate pedestrian areas - for example, put measures in place to ensure that pedestrians are able to walk in either direction, instead of herding them like "animals".

Two-way people traffic should be instituted to ensure relative ease to move from one point to another. Navigating from one point to the next caused pedestrians major frustration on Monday - luckily, people exercised patience otherwise this could have caused mass riot. The organisers perhaps did not experience this problem and as such might not be aware of this. Carnival is an interactive event - without crowd participation, the whole event is pointless."

"In response to Mr D. Winter...I’ve lived here all my life and attended carnival almost every year - as have many of my neighbours. Sure, there’s a mess afterwards but I don’t get how the Bank Holiday is "ruined" for anyone especially those who work in the area cos, frankly, most of ’em are off. What would he have us do? Cancel the Carnival so a few killjoys can mince around Kensington Park Road buyin’ overpriced foie gras at Felicitous??!!

To be honest, Carnival is one of the few times this manor gets anywhere near having the kind of buzz it had ’back in the day’ when there were ordinary families of all colours playin’ music in the summer evenings and enjoyin’ a drink on Portobello without a gorilla in a tux on the door tellin’ yer ta move on. Beats lookin’ at a bunch of guffawing suited, ever-so-cerebral and cultured media/banking muppets who bring eff-all to the area except a black Amex card and who desire nothing more than the same hardwood flooring, petrified birch and poncey soft-furnishings as the Faversham-Smythes or Ogilvy-Strops in the penthouse next door. Long may Carnival continue :)"

"I visited this year’s carnival for the second time ever. I have two constructive criticisms to make.

1. We were on the underground expecting to get off at Notting Hill Gate. An announcement was make saying no trains were stopping there...BUT NO ONE SAID WHERE TO GET OFF. We asked a platform attendant and he told us the necessary info but he would not arrange for an announcement to be made to give the required info to ALL passengers. I think you should arrange for London underground to HELP all passengers travelling to the carnival.

2. I found the floats disappointing for two or three reasons. There was too much of a gap in between many of those on the procession, sometimes 30 minutes and about half a mile. Many of those around the floats were simply walking most of the time...not dancing. There were tons of hangers on NOT dressed in carnival clothing were eating and drinking CONSTANTLY.Many were arguing amongst themselves.

None of the above helps to promote tourism. I for one, will not be returning to the carnival in a hurry, but I hope you will find my observations helpful for other years events."

"I went on Sunday with grandchildren aged 10 and 4. The crowded streets were a nightmare and no-one gave precedence to the kids. I couldn’t go first and push my way through for fear of losing them behind me and adults barged right into them. It’s the barriers that made the pavements so crowded, yet most of the time nothing was happening in the street - we had a very long wait before any floats came by and then long gaps between them.

The kids got bored just waiting. I agree with someone who said it’s all too organised. Worst of all, when we wanted to go home we couldn’t find a way out! Everywhere we went we came to a police barrier. We walked for a good hour and finally got a tube at Latimer Road, having planned to get a bus along the Harrow Road. I don’t think my two will want to go again! Perhaps the Sunday should be reserved for people with kids only, like most playgrounds are."

Mr D Midwinter said on 25th August
"I feel I should put you straight on how the carnival started, I get fed up of listening to everyone saying it was started by people from Trinidad and the Caribbean. My families were at the first Carnival, my Grandfather has it on film - he filmed it on his cine camera. There were no costumes, one steel band, some sort of girls marching band. It wasn’t supposed to be a Carnival, it was more of a children’s street party and it wasn’t supposed to carry on year after year. I have watched documentaries on the Carnival and it seems to me that everyone forgets what happened at the first Carnival and they say it started out as a celebration of black culture or because it happened in Trinidad.

I think you should get your facts straight. You should also spare a thought for those people who live and work in the area. Bank holiday weekend in Notting Hill has been ruined for these people. I used to be a postman in Notting Hill and I know for a fact that most people (black or white) who live in the area don’t go to the Carnival. When its all over it is one of the most disgusting areas in England, rotting food, drink, grease, piss and worse are left and its normally there for a week at least."
